The Southwest Florida K-9 Search Unit is a non-profit team made up of highly trained volunteer support personnel, K-9 handlers, trainers and their canines. Our purpose is to assist law enforcement agencies, fire departments and emergency management services in a time of disaster or community need. The team trains specifically to find lost persons, alive or deceased. Members receive continuous training in the many skills required in search and rescue from incident command/management, K-9 training in obedience, air scent, trailing, tracking, water rescue, cadaver, public relations, evidence preservation, communication, dispatch, critical incident management and numerous other skills. Each K-9 handler is responsible for the initial and continuous training of their dog. Handlers and support personnel receive training in CPR, First Aid, Pet First Aid, First Responder, Land Navigation, Wilderness Survival, Hazardous Material Awareness, Blood borne Pathogen, Crime Scene Preservation, Incident Command as well as achieving National Certification prior to deployment.
A volunteer K-9 search team consists of a handler, the K-9 and support personnel. To get the same probability of detection using people alone would take 20 to 30 trained human searchers to be as effective as a single K-9 team. Our K-9 search teammates have devoted their lives to the training and dedication of helping others with no monetary gain. Our only goal is to bring families back together again and give them the peace of finding the missing loved one. This team is one that works from the heart. The missing person incident is a race against time. A K-9 search time is most effective when called early in the search, but can be an asset days or weeks later. Don't hesitate to call early. Our Search Unit would rather arrive at a scene and find the individual safe in a matter of miscommunication then to arrive too late to help the victim.
We deploy only non-aggressive dogs to search for a missing person.
We are funded entirely by the volunteers of the team and donations or contributions made. This is a team of volunteers with a desire to give something back to the people of their community. If you are interested in making a donation, please contact us.
